In Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, a man named Cody Balmer, 38, scaled the security fence of the Pennsylvania governor’s mansion in the middle of the night, breaking into the building and setting a fire that caused significant damage. Governor Josh Shapiro, his family, and their guests were forced to evacuate due to the fire. Balmer was later captured and will face charges of attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated arson, and aggravated assault.
Shapiro, who had spent the previous night celebrating Passover with his family and others at the residence, addressed the incident at a news conference on Sunday. He stated that the incident will only strengthen his resolve to continue his duties and practice his faith. Shapiro also emphasized the need for society to recognize the growing violence and work towards a better future.
Authorities reported that Balmer had planned the attack, using a homemade incendiary device and penetrating the security measures in place. He was inside the mansion for about a minute before fleeing. Balmer has a history of criminal charges, including simple assault, theft, and forgery.
The fire caused extensive damage to the room where the Passover seder had taken place, with broken windows and signs of charring throughout the space. Shapiro announced that the Department of Justice, FBI, and U.S. attorney’s office, along with fellow governors, have offered their support. Additionally, Vice President J.D. Vance and former Pennsylvania Governors, Mark Schweiker and Tom Ridge, have condemned the attack and expressed their hope for justice.
