Myanmar Sees Increase in Earthquake Fatalities Surpassing 3,000

In Yangon, the death toll from last week’s earthquake in Myanmar has risen to 3,085 as search and rescue teams continue to locate more bodies. The military government stated on Thursday that 4,715 people have been injured and 341 are missing. The epicenter of the 7.7 magnitude earthquake was near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, causing widespread destruction in multiple regions.

Local media reports have recorded higher casualties than the official figures. With telecommunications still recovering and many areas inaccessible, the numbers are expected to rise as more information becomes available. The World Health Organization has reported that several hospitals and health centers have been damaged or destroyed, hindering access to medical care for those in need.

In Mandalay, a mobile hospital from India and a joint Russian-Belarusian hospital are now operational, providing medical assistance. As many individuals remain homeless and fearful of further aftershocks, workers are busy setting up tents in open fields to provide shelter. Residents of Mandalay have also shown their support by offering refreshments to volunteers.

Over 1,550 international rescuers are working alongside local teams, and rescue supplies have been sent by 17 countries. However, the military’s control over the country, obtained in 2021, has raised concerns about the junta’s role in earthquake recovery and potential hindrance of humanitarian aid.

The military has declared a temporary ceasefire until April 22, following similar announcements by armed resistance groups. While violations of the ceasefire have been reported, the military has stated that they will still take necessary measures against these groups.

In Bangkok, where the earthquake caused the collapse of a skyscraper under construction, the search for survivors and bodies continues. Despite reports of a possible sound of life in the rubble, no individuals were found by the end of the day.
