U.S. Gains More Trust from Southeast Asia Based on Survey Results

The latest State of Southeast Asia Survey Report by the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute reveals a growing trust among Southeast Asians toward the U.S., with a preference to align with the U.S. over China, contrary to last year’s results. The survey, conducted between January 3 and February 15, found that 47.2% of respondents expressed increased trust in the U.S., while distrust decreased from 37.6% to 33.0%. However, this shift in sentiment is prior to President Donald Trump’s announcement of new tariffs that could alter the region’s perception. Experts warn that current results might differ if polled today, considering the recent policy changes. The survey also indicates a rise in trust in China, though distrust remains higher, with concerns over China’s potential threat to countries’ sovereignty and interests, particularly regarding the disputed South China Sea. The fluctuating preferences suggest Southeast Asia’s role in the U.S.-China rivalry, despite a desire to remain neutral. Trust in other major powers such as Japan, the European Union, and India has also increased, with Japan being the most trusted. The U.S., however, could learn from Japan’s consistent engagement approach to build and maintain trust.
