Embracing Bold Actions: UN Calls for Inclusive Transformation on Syria’s 14th Anniversary of Conflict

The UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, urged an immediate end to hostilities and called on all parties to uphold international law and protect civilians. In a statement on Friday, he recalled the peaceful pro-democracy protests of 2011 that descended into one of the most brutal conflicts of our time. Pedersen emphasized that as Syria enters a pivotal moment post-2024, with the Assad regime no longer in power, it is crucial to address the humanitarian crisis and rebuild the country inclusively. He stressed the importance of creating a credible and inclusive transitional government and constitutional framework and process, and the need for full political inclusion of women in shaping Syria’s future. UN Secretary-General António Guterres also called for bold and decisive measures to ensure safety, dignity, and inclusion for all Syrians. Furthermore, the UN Security Council issued a statement supporting an inclusive, Syrian-led political process facilitated by the United Nations, based on resolution 2254 (2015), and condemned the recent violence in Latakia and Tartus.
