The physician was celebrated not only for his unwavering commitment to global health but also for his leadership and the clarity, compassion, and conviction he brought to navigating some of the world’s most challenging health crises, from AIDS and malaria to avian influenza and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. He also played a crucial role as the Special Representative of the former Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on food security and nutrition, heading the UN High-Level Task Force on the Global Food Security Crisis.

Libya: Migrant Crisis Worsens
Separately, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reported a tragic incident involving migrants off the coast of Tobruk, Libya, which resulted in at least 18 deaths and left fifty people missing, with ten survivors identified. The IOM has called attention to the dangerous journeys migrants undertake, pointing out that Libya serves as a major transit point for individuals seeking safety and opportunities, many of whom face exploitation, abuse, and life-threatening conditions.

IOM teams are currently providing support to those affected, while also renewing calls for enhanced regional cooperation to improve access to safe, regular, and dignified migration pathways.
Lebanon: Trial Conclusion in Peacekeeper Murder Case
In a significant legal development, the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has welcomed the verdict in the trial concerning the murder of Irish peacekeeper Private Seán Rooney in 2022. The Lebanon Permanent Military Court found six individuals guilty of the murder, while another was acquitted. UNIFIL expressed its support for the Government of Lebanon’s commitment to justice and extended its condolences to Rooney’s family, friends, colleagues, and the Government of Ireland.
