Syria has entered an uncertain chapter after 14 years of war, with 90 percent of its population living in poverty. Despite the challenges, approximately one million people living in camps and displacement sites in the country’s northwest may return home within the next year. As Syrians prepare to go back, they face the difficult task of rebuilding and confronting their past.
Waad Al-Kateab, the director of the documentary “For Sama,” captured life under siege in Aleppo before fleeing Syria in 2016. Since then, she has been a powerful advocate for the Syrian people through her organization, Action For Sama, which focuses on human rights, dignity, and accountability.
In an interview with UN News, Al-Kateab shares her determination to ensure justice is not forgotten in Syria’s next chapter. She discusses the confusion and mixed emotions that arise as Syrians return home, and the ongoing pain and grief endured throughout the years of conflict.
Al-Kateab expresses her connection to those on the ground in Syria and mentions her plans to obtain citizenship in the UK, enabling her to travel freely. She acknowledges the devastating state of the country and the significance of starting anew. Despite the fear and uncertainty, Al-Kateab and the people of Syria are hopeful for a brighter future.
Al-Kateab also addresses the importance of transitional justice and accountability, emphasizing the need for everyone responsible for the atrocities committed to face consequences. While the worst part of the work may be over, she highlights the challenging issues that lie ahead, including transitional justice, economic revival, and international involvement.
Looking at her role in the rebuilding process, Al-Kateab aims to bring her experience as a filmmaker back to Syria. She plans on organizing screenings and facilitating conversations to foster healing and understanding among local communities.
Al-Kateab’s message to the international community is clear: Syria’s situation is unique and requires tailored support. She calls for a Syrian-led transition free from armed groups or foreign influence, with the international community stepping up to help meet the aspirations of the Syrian people for peace, justice, and accountability.
