In a recent statement, Secretary-General António Guterres criticized what he termed as an egregious breach of Qatari sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He stressed that all parties involved should prioritize the achievement of a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, instead of “dismantling it”.
Key Leaders Unharmed, Hamas Asserts
Hamas reported six fatalities, including the son of a former exiled leader from the Gaza Strip, but clarified that its high-level negotiators and principal officials had not been killed.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel bore sole responsibility for the strike, although the White House Spokesperson noted that the U.S. President had been informed in advance and instructed his team to alert Doha, but the notification came too late to prevent the assault.
President Donald Trump took to social media to express that bombing Qatar, a “sovereign nation and close ally” of the United States, serves no purpose in advancing the objectives of either Israel or the U.S.
‘Clear Violation’: Qatar’s Response
Qatari officials denounced the attack as a flagrant violation of international law, with the Prime Minister of Qatar insisting at a press briefing that “there must be a collective response from the region to such savage actions.”
Qatar, in collaboration with the US and Egypt, has been proactive in mediating to conclude the Gaza conflict which commenced on October 7, 2023, following an assault by Hamas and other militant groups on Israeli settlements in the south.
