Ukraine: Guterres issues a strong plea for peace as violent conflict enters its third year


In a statement released on Sunday, António Guterres emphasized the need for a sustainable and just peace during this tragic event. He conveyed that Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity must be upheld within its internationally recognized borders in accordance with the UN Charter, international law, and resolutions of the General Assembly. Guterres voiced his concern that the war in Ukraine poses a significant threat not only to the peace and security of Europe but also to the fundamental principles and foundations of the UN. He appealed for a rapid de-escalation and an immediate cessation of hostilities, emphasizing that enough is enough after three years of destruction and loss. The Secretary-General welcomed all efforts towards a just and inclusive peace, stating that the UN is ready to support these initiatives.
