UN Secretary-General Guterres Denounces Violent Assault in Haiti Resulting in Minimum of 40 Fatalities

Haiti Crisis

The forceful attack on the 11th of September constitutes the most recent in a series of violent episodes and continuous gang violence that have affected the nation since the beginning of last year.

In a statement released by his spokesperson, Mr. Guterres offered his “heartfelt condolences” to the families of those affected and implored the Haitian authorities to seek justice for the victims.

“The levels of violence unsettling Haiti are a cause for great concern for the Secretary-General,” stated Mr. Dujarric, who represents Mr. Guterres. “He urges Member States to accelerate the support for the Multinational Security Support mission aimed at aiding the Haitian National Police.”

Only a short time ago, Mr. Guterres addressed the United Nations Security Council to highlight the grave situation in Haiti. “The government’s control is faltering,” he revealed, as various armed factions increase their influence over Port-au-Prince and its environs, spiral violence leading families to leave and daily life to fall apart.

Given that six million individuals need help and 1.3 million are displaced, the humanitarian emergency in Haiti is becoming worse. Yet, only a small portion of the $908 million appeal has been funded. The UN chief described the situation as “regrettably underfunded and sadly overlooked,” cautioning that up to 1.7 million people could receive no assistance at all.
