Voters in Germany continued several global electoral trends during their recent elections: incumbents got booted out, young people shifted rightward, and the results contained yet another surprise. A far-right, anti-immigration party, known as Alternative für Deutschland or AfD, came in second place and appeared to receive some support from the LGBTQ community.
The shift of gay, lesbian, and bisexual voters towards right-wing or nationalist parties is a noticeable trend across Western European countries such as the UK, France, and now Germany. In these countries, some sections of the gay community are increasingly supporting far-right parties. However, this trend is not evident in the United States, where, according to a CNN report, the majority of the LGBTQ community supported Democratic candidates more than they did in the 2020 election.
The primary reasons for this difference between Europe and the US may be that Europeans generally have different experiences with international migration than Americans, and the Republican Party in the US has a history that causes many in the American queer community to distrust them.
