Alegres del Barranco’s US Visas Cancelled for ‘Glorifying Drug Lord’

The US State Department has revoked the visas of members of a Mexican band, Los Alegres del Barranco, for “glorifying a drug kingpin”. The band projected an image of El Mencho, the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), onto a screen at a recent concert in Mexico. The CJNG is one of eight criminal groups recently declared “foreign terrorist organisations” by the Trump administration. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau stated in a post on X that the Trump Administration takes seriously its responsibility in controlling foreigners’ access to the US and does not welcome people who support criminals and terrorists. The band was also criticized by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who ordered an investigation into the incident. Narcocorridos, songs praising drug cartel leaders, are not uncommon in Mexico, and some bands rely on income early in their careers from being hired to play at private parties hosted by people involved in or connected to the cartels.
