White South Africans who were granted refugee status under a program initiated by US President Donald Trump departed from Johannesburg on Sunday. According to a reporter from Reuters, a queue of white citizens with airport trolleys full of luggage were seen waiting to have their passports stamped before they entered the departure lounge. The US-funded charter plane carried 49 passengers, as stated by South African Transport Ministry spokesperson Collen Msibi. The application for the permit mentioned that Afrikaners were relocating to the USA as refugees. Afrikaners are a white ethnic minority primarily descended from Dutch, German, and French settlers who ruled South Africa during the apartheid regime. The plane’s scheduled route was to Dulles Airport outside Washington and then to Texas. However, NPR reported earlier that 12 states had agreed to take in the Afrikaners.
