US President Trump announces the capture of individual responsible for Kabul airport terror attack, according to DW dated 03/05/2025

An individual believed to be associated with the “Islamic State” (IS), reportedly involved in planning the suicide bombing at Kabul’s Abbey Gate that claimed over 180 lives, has been arrested and is being transferred to the United States. President Donald Trump announced this during his first address to Congress since beginning his second term in office.

Though Trump didn’t provide further details about the arrest or the operation, he expressed gratitude to Pakistan for its role in capturing the person responsible for the “atrocity.”

A suicide bomber detonated an explosive device amid a large crowd outside Hamid Karzai International Airport’s Abbey Gate as people were attempting to flee Afghanistan following the Taliban’s takeover in 2021.

The attack resulted in the deaths of 183 individuals, including 13 U.S. troops who were securing the perimeter, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

“He is currently en route here to face the swift justice of the United States,” Trump remarked, implicitly criticizing then-President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from Afghanistan.
